The Old House at Home
Warren Row
All photographs of closed pubs on this site are in sepia. But in this case, I did
consider illustrating the pub in colour. This is for two reasons; firstly, the pub
is not closed; and secondly, it still sells Brakspear’s beers. Now called the
“Crooked House”, this is a rare example of a pub being sold with a licence.
When I first visited this pub in 1976 it consisted of a small front sitting room with
no bar to speak of. Furnishing included a sofa to sit on and books to read. Today it
is more of a restaurant than a pub, although you can still pop in for a beer. The
internal walls have been removed to provide one long bar and dining area. But there
is still a sofa and books to read.
Main courses are in the range £10 to £15. Bar snacks are £5 to £7. A glass of
champagne will cost £4.75. Brakspear’s bitter and special were available on my
last visit. (March 1999).
